Just after Christmas, we made a trip down to the coastal city of
Cape Town to celebrate the New Year. It is a city full of adventures, and we tried to take in as many as we could while also enjoying some times of relaxing. While our adventures were a bit mild compared to the cage diving with great white sharks opportunities that are available there, we still had a great time. Rather than try to squeeze a whole week of adventures into one blog, we thought we would break it up day by day. We definitely have the stories and the pictures for it. So, with no further ado...
Day 1 - Johannesburg to Cape Town

We had a morning flight and the airport is always a highlight of any adventure we take. The boys were full of questions along the way about the airport, the kind of plane, the length of the flight, etc. In their short lives, they are quite the seasoned travelers, and everyone who sees three small kids coming and gives us worried looks are usually quite surprised. The flight was only two hours, and for the boys was probably not long enough. This flight marked the first time for Noah to have his own seat and for as big as he is getting, he looked so tiny in that big seat. He loved it. He got many looks from the passengers sitting around us. A few even felt compelled to compliment how well the boys did, and one lady said she had never seen anything like it. Oddly, we ran into her the next day at one of the sites we visited. She was with some friends and she told them, "These are the boys I was telling you about." It was just another day on the airplane for them.

We were staying in the town of
Fish Hoek, situated on False Bay of the Cape Peninsula. It is a sleepy town, with a family-friendly beach. The only concern was for the reputation that the Fish Hoek beach has for great-white shark sightings and attacks due mainly to the proximity of
Seal Island (can be seen from the beach) which is occupied by the shark's favorite snack - the Cape Fur seal.
The boys had overheard us talking about this and decided that maybe they didn't want to swim in the ocean. We assured them that the knee-deep (and most likely ankle-deep) water that they would be playing in was not where these sharks would be looking for a quick meal.

We spent our first day just familiarizing ourselves with the area where
we were staying, getting food into our apartment and planning out our
week's adventures. Our apartment was a mere five minute walk to the
beach, so a stroll along the beach seemed like an appropriate way to
bring an end to our first day in Cape Town. Here are some pictures of
"our" beach at Fish Hoek and the boy's excitement. Stay tuned, as the
adventure has only just begun.

I'm not surprised about your boys and airplanes! They've had plenty of experience but they also are adventurers! How nice to hear those comments!
ReplyDeleteSorry. I just saw your comment. They used to be linked to our email. Hmmm. Yes, the boys are always adventure seekers as long as there is a plane ride involved (or some other form of motorized transportation). It was so funny to see the lady on top of Cape Point the next day and have her remember us and want to show the boys off to her friends. You would have thought we had known each other much longer than the five minutes we spent talking as we disembarked the plane the day before.
